Evaporative Cooling System and Skids
American Moistening Company (AMCO) has over 100 years experience manufacturing fogging systems and has performed thousands of installations. Fluid Energy represents AMCO and our engineers can help you specify and install a state-of-the-art gas turbine fogging system that will increase your turbine’s output by as much as 20 percent.
How AMCO’s Fogging System Works
  • Pressurized demineralized water is fed into a series of seamless stainless steel headers connected to stainless steel nozzle manifolds, normally immediately downstream of the high efficiency filters.
  • Specialized AMCO nozzles atomize the pressured water into ultra-fine droplets that quickly and efficiently evaporate, no matter how humid.
Benefits of Gas Turbine Inlet Cooling
  • Increase combustion turbine output up to 20%
  • Fast and easy installations
  • Improve efficiency
  • Rapid payback
  • Reduce heat rate
  • Reduce NOx emissions
  • Negligible inlet pressure drop
    Why AMCO and Fluid Energy?
  • Approved OEM supplier on new gas turbines
  • Typical cooling increments of 1°F
  • Controls manage multiple cooling zones
  • Full penetration TIG welding
  • 316L stainless steel construction
  • Proprietary state-of-the-art nozzle technology; no impaction pin
  • Local support before and after installation High Pressure Skid
    High Pressure Pump Skid
The high pressure pump skid is the heart of the fogging system. It is where the controls for the system are located. The high pressure pump skid’s primary onboard components have been engineered to meet or exceed the highest industry standards and include:
  • Heavy duty, premium TEFC electric motors
  • Ceramic plunger pumps with stainless steel heads
  • High efficiency water filter
  • Motor control center
  • System control
    Demineralizer Water Skid
Before the water is pumped to the high pressure pump skid, it must first pass through the demineralizer water skid. The system components include the following:
  • Skid assemblies
  • Resin tanks
  • Underdrain
  • Upper distributor
  • Regenerant distributors
  • Resin
  • System piping and valves
  • Instrumentation
  • System control

The demineralizer cycle works as follows:
  • Onstream – pre-filtered water is pumped downstream through the resin beds.
  • Anion Pre-Heat – the cold anion bed is heated with warm demineralized water from the warm water supply system.
  • Anion Regeneration – concentrated caustic drawn from the bulk supply is diluted in-line immediately below the anion bed wit heated demineralized water from the product storage tank. The diluted caustic is pumped upward through the anion bed.
  • Anion Rinse – the anion bed is rinsed with demineralized water from the product storage tank to wash out remaining caustic regenerant.
  • Internal Recirculation – water within the system is circulated in a closed loop through the resin beds to move trace sodium ions from the caustic regenerant to the cation bed.
  • Cation Regeneration – concentrated acid drawn from the bulk supply is diluted in-line immediately below the cation bed with demineralized water from the storage tank. Diluted acid is pumped upward through the cation bed.
  • Cation Rinse – the cation bed is rinsed with demineralized water from the product storage tank to wash out remaining acid regenerant.
  • Internal Recirculation – prior to onstream, water at the outlet is purified to desired quality by recirculating water within the system in a closed loop through the resin beds.
    Water Forwarding Skid
Before the water is pumped to the demineralizer water skid, it must first pass through the water forwarding skid. Because the size of the fogging systems is frequently different, and because there are varying distances and elevation changes from the water source to the turbine, the water forwarding skids can be quite different. Custom-designed skids are available to take water from a lake, river, basin, or other water source and move it into the gas turbine fogging system.

    Sentry Mist Eliminator
    Problem:
Compressed air system coalescing and particulate filters cannot handle excessive water and oil loads. It is common for the amount of moisture exiting the aftercooler to exceed 200 PPMw. Most traditional coalescing filters are not efficient when challenged with loads greater than 20 PPMw.

    Solution:
Sentry Mist Eliminator Sentry Mist Eliminators can easily handle 20 PPMw. Actually, the Sentry Mist Eliminator can remove 99.5% of all liquid loads up to 30,000 PPMw.

    How it Works:
The thick packed-bed filter design continuously drains itself as liquids coalesce, quietly dropping to the sump for draining. Face velocities are extremely low virtually eliminating the possibility of liquid re-entrainment.

    Benefits
  • Particulate Removal - Removes 100% of all particles 3µm and greater. 99.5% removal efficiency of all particles down to 0.1µm. The Sentry Mist Eliminator has an unparalleled ability to remove both particulate and liquid from compressed air streams.
  • Low Pressure Drop - Sentry Mist Eliminators have pressure drops of less than 1 PSID, often for more than 10 years. Sentry mist eliminators can last 10 to 20 times longer than conventional cartridge filters.
  • Low Operating Cost - Using a conservative assumption that Sentry Mist Eliminators will reduce pressure drop 3 PSID as compared to conventional cartridge filters, a 1.5% efficiency gain can be achieved. For a typical 5,000 SCFM system, energy savings can easily exceed $6,000 per year and more, depending on the cost of energy.

    Intake Air Filter Systems
Fluid Energy can supply both cartridge and panel style turbine intake air filters.

Fluid Energy’s partner EMW manufactures air filters optimized for use with new gas turbines to supply the protection they require: 95% efficiency at 0.4 µm. An advantage of EMW Pocket FilterEMW filters is the filter frame is reusable; only the media is changed-out. Having to only replace the media reduces disposal costs and shipping costs. EMW recommends a two or three stage filtration format.
  • Coalescer (stage 1) – A coated glass fiber media or polyether foam to stop water droplets larger than 4µm. This stage of filtration may not be necessary depending on the quality of your air source.
  • Pocket Coarse Dust Filter (second stage)- Pocket filters collect all of the heavy and large contaminants. Generally, pocket filters need changing twice before the third stage final filters need replacement. Pocket filters are manufactured of synthetic media and do not use any metal. The entire filter can be incinerated after use turning waste into energy. The pocket filters can be supplied with varying types of media up to class F5, as well as with different numbers of pockets to enlarge the filter surface area to meet your applications requirements.
  • Minipleat Fine Filters (Stage 3) – EMW Minipleat FilterMinipleats have V shaped pleats held in place by a plastic housing. The housings are completely cast to stop bypass of dust or any other contaminants.EMW Combination Filtration System Minipleats are available in classes from F6 to F9 and H10 and H14.

EMW offers a combination filter system that combines pocket filters and fine filters, saving space and reducing installation costs. The pocket filters can be changed with the turbine running and without disturbing the fine filters.
